Papago Park and the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, and Scottsdale are setting a master plan for the future of Papago Park. We are looking for mountain biker, hiker help to get plans for sustainable fun trails built and the installation of a mountain bike skills park to include a pumptrack. Cool Summer Nite!

After a couple days of consisent rain in the Phoenix area, I was super stoked to finally get our for a ride. I was hoping for tacky trails, but the sandy south mountain trails sucked all the moisture up like a sponge. As least it wasn’t dusty. We started after 9 at the 46th parking lot. After a while of sorting out the bikes and the lights we were finally on trail. Headed east on the east loops we noticed that the cloud cover combined with the city lights it created a crazy orange glow on the trail. Most of the ride we didn’t have to turn the lights on as the trail was well lit. We looped around under the power lines to the pima fireroad. Andy took a good little trip over the bars on the ridgeline, something about a rock monster grabbing his front tire. I noticed my shoe was fitting funny, looked down and I blew out the whole sole of my right shoe. At least I could still clip in:) Up towards the start of mormon, the sky was still glowing and the trails were wide open. I thought that I could grunt up a part of mormon that always gives me trouble and it did again, bammmm, right to the ground. Andy and I were even in crashes. We cranked our way up mormon, to the y and continued up national to the saddle. Stopped and grabbed a little 11pm snack, armoured up and headed down. It always feels faster going down that trail at night. We were rallying and shredding down natty, down mormon and on to the javelina hike. Hiked up to the top of javelina and took one last look at the city lights. Just as we were dropping in it started to drizzle. It was so nice getting smacked in the face with the rain drops while ripping down the trail. We hammered most of it until I felt my tires get a little more grippy than usualy, you know what that means…FLAT! No biggie as I had a new tube and a headlamp and made quick order of the snakebite and we were on the trail. Finished the main down of Javelina, up the short hike a bike. Shredded down the down, stopped to watch Andy make it descent, about a third of the way down, the rock monster grabbed his front again and brought him down. Wish I had the camera rolling for that:) He got up, dusted himself off and to the car we went. Loaded up and went home. I threw all my stinkys into the wash and grabbed a bowl of recovery mint chip ice cream and enjoyed the night rain before bed. Another great night, 9+ miles, a few crashes, a blown out shoe, a snakebitten tube and a millipede. Can’t wait for next time!

South Mountain Hot Summer Night Rides Begin

Andy and I took our first of soon to be many night rides out at South Mountain last night. Started at the warpaint parking area, headed out on DC to Telegraph, turned around and did the goat hike up the backside of the helipad. We stopped and took a break, took some photos and continued our shred down that sweet ridgeline trail. It’s so much fun, especially by headlamp. We headed back to DC and found our way up to secret, ripped that one at 20+mph, continued the loop back to warpaint. 13 miles, 85 degress, no other bikers and only one scorpion seen. Great night out on the hills. Heres some pics and vid.

Another fan-frickentastic morning on the great somo…well for most of us anyways. A little carnage in the form of pausch getting his revenge on mighty geronimo, but ended up getting a couple nice holes in his elbow through his pads. Good thing meegan was there to patch him up.


Mikey and Trent had some drivetrain issues…mike broke his hanger clean off and trent bent a front ring.

The rest of us took it easy and made it down no prob. Rich was there to lead us down Natty to 24th st. which is always a blast. Almost took Chollaball out on the switchback/rock roll section of natty. Sorry bro… Maybe next time we’ll stop and chat a bit, still have yet to meet you.

Did I mention I love 24th, the faster you ride that trail the smoother it is! “You really ride down this trail on those?” asked a couple of hikers on there way up. Scooter was getting all crazy finding new lines down the trail and almost ended off the side a couple times. Jeanie shredded like she had no shoulder probs at all. “I feel like another run!!!” five minutes later “I think I’ll drive…” Damn adrenaline never lasts as long as it should. Jeanie was nice enough to drop Brett and I up top for another run down the Natmonun… Ripping and super hot!!! The trail and temperature, not Brettski…

Hot Hawes Shuttle 4/19/2009

Went on a good sunday ride with Jeanie and ABC last sunday. Wanted to get some trail shredding in but didn’t want to do the big pedal because of the heat so we shuttled that sh!t! Great time, drifted a few corners, got some air, found a new section of trail…shhhhh, it’s a bobcat secret. All good stuff. Can’t wait to rip it again with the big bike.
